Technology is supposed to solve problems. It also has an inconvenient habit of changing the people, institutions, habits, and environments around those problems.

A clock does more than tell time. A factory does more than make goods. A car does more than move its driver. A smartphone is not merely a phone with delusions of grandeur. Technologies shape what societies consider normal, efficient, possible, desirable, and increasingly unavoidable.

Philosophy of Technology explores the ideas of thinkers such as Karl Marx, Martin Heidegger, Max Weber, Lewis Mumford, Jacques Ellul, Marshall McLuhan, Bruno Latour, Langdon Winner, Neil Postman, and Shoshana Zuboff through the technologies and systems of everyday life.

The book examines industrial machinery, infrastructure, bureaucracy, standards, measurement, surveillance, platforms, algorithms, automation, and artificial intelligence. Along the way, it asks why labor-saving devices so often create more work, how efficiency became a social ideal, why technological systems become difficult to escape, how design quietly distributes power, and what happens when human judgment is converted into metrics, profiles, and automated decisions.

For most of human history, being late was difficult to accomplish with precision. You could arrive after sunrise, after the market had filled, after Mass had begun, or after everyone else had eaten. These were recognizable failures of timing, but they were not yet the modern offense of being twelve minutes late. Nature provided rhythms; communities provided occasions; neither usually issued a numerical verdict. Then Europe acquired the mechanical clock, and civilization gained one of its most durable moral instruments: a machine capable of transforming “not yet” into “8:47” and “soon” into evidence against you.

Medieval Europeans had not previously wandered through their days in a charming fog, surprised by every sunset. Ancient societies measured time with sundials, water clocks, candles, astronomy, and practical experience. Farmers, priests, merchants, and sailors all cared about sequence and duration. The change was not discovering that time passes. It was making equalized units of time increasingly public, repeatable, and authoritative.

The monastery is an obvious place to look for the appetite that preceded the machine. The Rule of Saint Benedict, associated with Benedict of Nursia in the sixth century, organized monastic life around recurring prayer, reading, rest, and labor. Canonical hours punctuated the day, and bells summoned communities long before reliable mechanical clocks sat in towers. Lewis Mumford made this connection famous in Technics and Civilization in 1934: temporal discipline preceded the mechanism that later enforced it more regularly. Monks were not secretly inventing corporate scheduling. Regularity simply mattered enough to become a technical problem.
